Instrumental

Despite early flirtations with other instruments, it was always the flute which fixed my attention…

I’ve written elsewhere about the difficulties faced by the nascent flute player in early 1970s Ireland brought about by the scarcity of flutes, and how that radically changed as the Irish flute developed.

One thing that has always fascinated me is the relationship between the physical flute and the music played on it.

A second is that between the ability to play, and the ability to perform, which are not the same thing. Obviously one must be able to play in order to perform, but a poor player who’s a great performer can come across as more impressive to the listener than vice versa.

Personally I’ve always thought that I was a good player but a poor performer, but that being what it is here’s a few links (Coming soon) to performances over the years.
